Q&A with Mike Stevens

Mike Stevens

Mike and his business partner Dan saw that sweets, mints and gum were the same as they’d been for decades. They wanted to make something better and more sustainable, so they founded Peppersmith in 2009 to make confectionary that tastes good and does you good.

Now they offer three flavours of mints, as well as two chewing gum flavours, and you can find them in the UK, Holland, Japan, Turkey, and beyond.

Here’s what we talked about.

How did you come to found Peppersmith?

It was born out of our personal frustration that there was not a more natural and healthier alternative to conventional chewing gum and mints.

What does a typical day look like for you?

As someone who runs a small business I have to get involved in everything that is thrown my way, however my real focus is always on trying to not let this distract me from the most important jobs. I want to say to people, sorry if I didn’t respond to your email today – I care about you and your goals, your request was on the short list, but it didn’t make the top three. Sorry about that.

What are your ambitions for yourself and/or the company?

We are trying to turn Peppersmith into a product you have every day because you know its helps make your life that bit happier and healthier.

What challenges have you faced?

Too many to mention but that’s par for an entrepreneurial business.

If you could start all over again, would you do anything differently?

We are not perfect. We’ve made a tonne of mistakes and have learned loads, but we have no regrets.

What does success mean to you?

No regrets.

What do you do when you’re not working?

Family, fitness and fun.

Do you have any advice for entrepreneurs starting out, or just anyone who’s pursuing a goal?

The hardest things about starting on your grand plan is just getting started. Once you have committed to your goal and actually started the doing part as opposed to dreaming, musing, procrastinating, or worrying you are already 50% of the way there.
