How to use it

Put the brewer on the scale and press zero.

Add the coffee and note the number.

Zero again, then pour the water on. Now you know your ratio, and you can make the same cup tomorrow.

Which coffee works best

Whichever you buy, the number on the front of the bag is the strength. 8 is the easy end, 12 is the biggest hit.

If you take it with milk, start around 9. If you drink it black and want it to do some work, go to the top.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need scales?

If your coffee is good some days and not others, this is usually why. A scoop of ground coffee and a scoop of whole bean weigh different amounts, and so does the same scoop twice.

How much coffee should I use?

For a cafetière, 60g per litre of water is a good place to start. Adjust from there once you know what you like.

Which of the two scales should I get?

The platform one is flatter and tucks away in a drawer. The kitchen one is the better looking of the two if it is going to live on the counter.
