Intensity vs. Caffeine: Understanding Strong Coffee

It is a common misconception that a darker roast always means more caffeine. In reality, the "strength" of a coffee usually refers to its Intensity Rating—a measure of its flavour profile and body. While a dark roast provides a more powerful, smoky taste, the actual caffeine content is often more influenced by the ratio of coffee to water and the bean type. Our strong blends often incorporate high-quality Robusta to provide that extra caffeine boost alongside the deep, dark flavours of our Arabica beans.

Mastering the Dark Roast: The Art of the Bold Brew

Roasting strong coffee is a fine art. If roasted for too long, the beans become burnt; too short, and they lack the necessary punch. Our master roasters use precision-controlled technology to ensure our dark roasts achieve a "bold" profile that remains smooth on the palate. This process highlights the heavier, lower-note flavours like cocoa, earth, and smoke, making these coffees particularly well-suited for espresso-based drinks like Lattes and Flat Whites.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a coffee "strong"?

In the coffee industry, "strong" typically refers to the intensity of the flavour and the body of the brew. This is usually achieved through a darker roasting profile, which brings out bolder, smokier notes. However, it can also refer to the ratio of coffee to water used during brewing—the more coffee grounds you use, the "stronger" the drink will be.

Does dark roast coffee have more caffeine?

Actually, caffeine is quite stable during the roasting process. While dark roasts have a more intense flavour, they often have slightly less caffeine by volume because the beans lose mass and caffeine during longer roasts. If you want a high-caffeine kick, look for our blends that contain Robusta beans, which naturally carry almost double the caffeine of Arabica.

Which brewing method is best for strong coffee?

For the most intense experience, Espresso is king due to the high pressure and concentrated ratio. However, if you are brewing at home, a Moka Pot or a French Press (Cafetière) with a longer steep time will extract those deep, heavy oils and provide a robust, full-bodied cup.

How do I make my coffee stronger at home?

The simplest way to increase strength is to adjust your brew ratio. Try using more coffee grounds or less water. For a standard cafetière, aim for a ratio of 1:15 (one part coffee to fifteen parts water) to ensure a bold, powerful flavour that doesn't taste "watered down."

Is strong coffee always bitter?

Not necessarily. Bitterness is often a sign of over-extraction or poor-quality beans. Our strong coffees are expertly roasted to ensure that while the flavour is intense and dark, it remains smooth with a natural, chocolatey sweetness. Using filtered water and the correct temperature (about 94°C) also helps avoid unwanted bitterness.

Can I use strong coffee pods for milk-based drinks?

Yes! In fact, strong, dark-roasted coffee is the best choice for Lattes, Cappuccinos, and Flat Whites. The bold flavour profile is designed to "cut through" the milk, ensuring that the taste of the coffee remains the star of the show even when diluted.

How should I store my strong coffee beans to keep them bold?

To preserve those intense aromatics and oils, store your coffee in a cool, dark place in an airtight container. Oxygen is the enemy of flavour; keeping your beans or grounds sealed will ensure that every cup delivers the same powerful punch as the first.
