Scooping is where most of the inconsistency comes from. A scoop of coarse grounds and a scoop of fine ones hold different amounts of coffee, so the cup moves around and you end up blaming the beans.

Weigh it once, note what worked, repeat it. That's most of what people mean when they talk about getting good at coffee, and it's why Salter scales are on this site. The platform one is £16, the other is £25. Both are ordinary kitchen scales, which is all you need, because the number is the point.
