Big enough for the whole household. Simple enough for any morning.

The French press, or cafetière, is probably the most straightforward way to make coffee at home. Add coarsely ground coffee, pour in hot water, wait four minutes, press the plunger down. That's the whole method. No filter papers, no special equipment, nothing to measure too precisely.

This one from Ibili holds a full litre, which is enough for around four cups at once. The stainless steel frame keeps it sturdy and helps hold the heat while the coffee brews. Black finish, clean design, it works on any kitchen counter without drawing attention to itself.

No paper filters needed. Just coffee, hot water, and four minutes.

The details

Capacity: 1 litre, around 4 cups

Frame: Stainless steel

Colour: Black

Filter papers: None needed

Brew time: Around 4 minutes

Good if you… make coffee for more than one person, or like having a pot's worth ready without making multiple brews. The most fuss-free brewer in the range.

For the best results, use a coarser grind than you would for filter coffee, roughly the texture of coarse sea salt. If your coffee comes out gritty, go a little coarser. If it tastes weak, go a little finer.

Why you’ll love it

  • No filter papers, no electricity, nothing to go wrong.

How to make it

Coarse ground coffee into the bottom. Hot water on top. Give it a stir.

Lid on, plunger up, and leave it four minutes.

Press the plunger down slowly and pour straight away, or it keeps brewing and turns bitter.

Which coffee works best

Coarse grind, roughly the texture of coarse sea salt. 50 to 60g of coffee per litre of water is the ratio we use.

If it comes out gritty, go coarser. If it tastes thin, go a bit finer. That is almost always the fix.

Frequently asked questions

What grind do I need?

Coarse, roughly like coarse sea salt. Too fine and you get grit in the cup and a bitter finish.

How much coffee should I use?

Around 50 to 60g per litre of water. Four minutes before you plunge.

How many cups is a litre?

Around four. If you are brewing for one, the 350ml version makes more sense than half-filling this one.
