5 Different Ways to Brew Coffee At Home

There’s nothing quite like that first sip of coffee in the morning. Especially when you’ve brewed it your way, from the comfort of your home.

Whether you’re after a bold, punchy cup to kickstart your day, or something smooth and indulgent for a slow weekend, your chosen brewing method plays a big role in how your coffee tastes.

Spoiler alert: You don’t need a fancy espresso machine (or a barista certificate). With a few simple tools and a bit of know-how, you can make delicious coffee without any fuss (or even leaving your house!)

In this guide, we’ll walk you through 5 different ways to brew coffee. Whether you’re new to home brewing or looking to mix up your morning routine, we’ll help you find the right method for your taste and lifestyle.

Cafetière / French Press

The Cafetière (or French Press) is a traditional brewing method loved for its simplicity and rich flavour.

Invented in 1929, this method involves immersing medium ground coffee in hot water and then pressing through a metal filter. Unlike paper filters, metal filters retain more of the coffee's natural oils and finer particles - resulting in a rich, strong cup with a thicker mouth-feel.

Enjoy your cafetière coffee black for a punchier, more intense cup or with milk and sugar to bring out sweeter, nuttier notes. For Cafetière brewing, we recommend our Intense Roast Ground Coffee or Brunch Blend Ground Coffee.

Why we love it:

  • Easy and effective: Great for beginners, the Cafetière is an easy and reliable brewing method. Simply add 50g of medium ground coffee per litre of hot water, wait 4 minutes, then plunge and enjoy!

  • Great for a crowd: A large Cafetière can brew multiple cups of coffee at once, making it much quicker and easier than a pod machine.

Perfect For:

Busy mornings, relaxed weekends, or whenever you want a fuss-free cup of coffee.

Pour Over / Hario V60

Pour over brewing is a quick and easy way to make smooth, flavourful coffee in just a few minutes.

This method uses filter paper and gravity to extract the coffee. The filter paper removes a lot of the coffee sediment, resulting in a smooth, clean cup of coffee.

This is a great brewing method for single origin or lighter roast coffees, as it highlights their fruity, vibrant flavours. We recommend trying with our Daily Grind Ground Coffee or Brunch Blend Ground Coffee.

Why we love it:

  • Quick, easy and cheap: Ideal for brewing a single cup of coffee in minutes, pour over coffee is a great option for those wanting to get more into brewing. Plastic V60s are widely available for less than £10, with popular brands including Hario and Chemex.

  • Great for fruity, lighter coffees: This method uses gravity to quickly extract the jammy, nutty notes from your favourite single origin or lighter roast coffee.

Perfect For:

Busy mornings or lighter roast coffee.

Moka Pot

The Moka Pot is a stovetop coffee maker that uses steam pressure to brew rich, espresso-style coffee with a bold flavour & velvety mouthfeel. Due to the high temperature and pressure, more of the coffee compounds are extracted compared to pour over brewing.

This results in a strong, short coffee that can be enjoyed black or with milk for a rich, flavourful cappuccino or latte.

Moka Pot brewing requires finely ground coffee, so we recommend using our Supercharger Whole Bean Coffee and grinding fresh at home.

Why we love:

  • Makes espresso-style coffee at home: A Moka Pot is a great, cost-effective alternative to an expensive espresso machine. It brews rich, strong coffee that makes a great base or cappuccinos or lattes.

  • Classic and durable design: Invented in 1933, the Moka Pot has stood the test of time. Reliable and durable - it will brew rich, delicious coffee for many years.

Perfect For:

Slow mornings or after-dinner coffee, when you want a rich cup of coffee.

AeroPress

The AeroPress is a convenient coffee maker that brews one serving of smooth, rich coffee in minutes. This modern brewing method uses immersion, pressure & filtration to make consistently flavourful coffee.

It is a great option if you like to experiment with your morning coffee, as it allows you to brew a variety of coffee styles - from a short, espresso-like serve to a long black coffee. Additionally, it works well with a range of roasting styles (from light to dark coffees) and flavour profiles, so you can try something different every day.

It's lightweight, plastic design makes it portable and mess-free, allowing you to easily take it on-the-go.

For AeroPress brewing we recommend using medium-fine ground coffee, our Half-Caff Brunch Blend Whole Bean is a great option and can be ground fresh at home before use.

Why we love

  • Quick and mess-free: Great for a fast, single cup of coffee the AeroPress is a reliable and consistent method of brewing. It’s easy to clean, with the plunger whipping the chamber clean as you brew - making it great for every day use.

  • Versatile and portable: The AeroPress brews a variety of different coffee styles, from a short, espresso-like serve to a long black coffee. Its plastic, lightweight design allows it to be taken on-the-go, so you can brew great coffee out and about.

Perfect For:

Busy mornings or coffee on-the-go.

Clever Dripper

The Clever Dripper is a coffee maker that combines the rich intensity of a cafetière with the clean taste of a filter coffee. Using immersion brewing, medium ground coffee is steeped in hot water before being filtered for a full-bodied and smooth cup of coffee.

At first glance, the Clever Dripper looks like a standard cone-shaped pour-over, but it features a valve at the bottom that only releases coffee once placed on a mug. This clever design allows you to perfectly control the brewing time and ensure a mess-free brew every time.

Similarly to Cafetiere brewing, the Clever Dripper works best with medium ground coffee. We recommend our Decaf Brunch Blend Ground Coffee.

Why we love

  • Fast and simple: The Clever Dripper brews one cup of delicious coffee quickly and easily. There’s no need to master complicated techniques - simply combine good coffee, hot water and time.

  • Convenient and mess-free: With a lightweight plastic design and clever valve mechanism, the Clever Dripper is mess-free and easy to clean - making it great for busy work days. It uses a simple paper filter, that makes disposing of the ground coffee much quicker than a Cafetiere or Moka Pot.

Perfect For:

Weekend mornings when you want a rich & relaxing coffee with minimal effort.
